CMC
project development and exhibition
The first two stages of the Creative Media Centre (CMC) projectpreliminary
planning and scheme designhave been completed. The project will be submitted
to the Town Planning Board for
approval. The University will hold a briefing to the members of the Sham
Shui Po District Council on 26 October.
Staff and students who want
to learn more about the CMC project development can visit the exhibition
at the University Concourse from now until 25 October.

| Distinguished
Lecture by Prof Xu Jialu
Vice-Chairman of the 10th Standing Committee of the National People's
Congress and Director of the College of Chinese Language and Culture of
Beijing Normal University Professor Xu Jialu, kicks off
the 20th anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series with a talk on Zen on
18 October. In addition to delivering a distinguished lecture, Professor
Xu meets with CityU President, Professor H K Chang, and the senior management,
and tours the Chinese Civilisation
Centre and the School
of Creative Media.

| Visitors
from Beijing
An eight-member group led by Professor Han Qide, Vice-Chairman
of National People's Congress Standing Committee and Vice-President of
Peking University, will visit CityU on 19 October. Professor H
K Chang, CityU President, joined by Vice-Presidents and Faculty
Deans, will meet with the delegation and introduce them to the School
of Creative Media and the Centre of Super-Diamond and Advanced Films.

Task
Forces to boost image and admissions
At the Dean's Conference on 15 October, the University has decided to
set up two Task Forces to boost CityU's image and JUPAS admissions. Professor
Edmond Ko, Vice-President (Undergraduate Education) and Dean
of Students, will head a Task Force established to integrate learning
and working experiences of students. Another Task Force, to be chaired
by Professor Ian Holliday, Dean of Faculty
of Humanities and Social Sciences, is set up to optimize the JUPAS
admissions and advise on the University's recruitment process.

Partners
in southwest China
CityU fostered academic collaborations with six mainland
universities during a president-led visit to southwest China, 12-18 September.
In addition to renewing an academic exchange agreement with Kunming University
of Science and Technology, the University signed academic and/or student
exchange agreements with Guangxi University, Sichuan University, Southwest
Jiaotong University, Yunnan University, and a Faculty of Science and Enigneering-based
academic exchange agreement with the University of Electronic Science
and Technology of China.

Integrated
e-learning platform
To facilitate students to manage their own learning and
relieve course administration pressure on teachers, the University will
adopt a single e-learning platformthe Blackboard Academic Suite. The
suite consists of a learning management system (LMS), a portal system
and a content management system (CMS).
The new e-learning platform
represents full integration of learning resources and systems to support
student learning. Chief
Information Officer Dr Jerry Yu will discuss the
issues of e-learning and the information services strategic plan 2005-2010
in an open forum at 4 pm, 20 October, in P4701.

Good
People Management Award 2004
CityU has been shortlisted for the final selection in
the category for establishments with more than 501 employees for the Good
People Management Award 2004 organized by the Labour
Department. On behalf of the University, the Human
Resources Office will make a presentation to the panel of judges on
26 October. Results will be announced in mid-December.

Applied
Research Exhibition and Concurrent Seminar
CityU will showcase the research outputs and commercialized results of
over 50 applied research projects in the Applied Research Exhibition and
Concurrent Seminar from 5-13 November, Blue Zone, 4/F, Academic Building.
The event, organized around the theme "Knowledge Creates, Technology
Applies" is one of the 20th anniversary celebration activities to
promote CityU's achievements in applied research and developments. In
conjunction with the exhibition, Professor Patrick Grant,
Cookson Professor of Materials at the University of Oxford, will deliver
a keynote speech on "Commercialization of University Research"
on 5 November.

Kudos
Ma Wan-yin and Yuk Kai-leung, graduates
of the Associate of Arts in Applied Japanese Studies of the Division
of Language Studies (LS), received one-year scholarships from the
Education Ministry of the Japanese Government. The two graduates will
study Japanese language and culture in Japan from October 2004 to August
2005. This is the fourth year in a row that LS graduates have received
the award.

20th
Anniversary updates
CityU will produce a commemorative stamp pane to recap
the milestone developments of the University in the last 20 years. The
new souvenir item will be available in early December.

Students
attended UBC test
About 60 CityU students received the chance to broaden
their exposure and test their English proficiency by attending the admission
test, Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP),organized
by the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, on 16 October. The
students volunteered to sit for the test in response to UBC's invitation
to assist them with the development of a new computer-based English Language
test.

Banquet
The annual CityU Banquet, organized by the Students'
Union, will take place on 29 October. The event will also mark the take-off
ceremony of the "Proud of 20" Team which will complete a 100 km-walk
on the MacLehose Trail from 5-7 November.
