Four-year Undergraduate Structure
The University has prepared the curriculum framework for the four-year undergraduate degree structure and solicited views from Faculties and Schools via consultation with their respective Boards in late January. After consolidating their views, the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Education will submit the framework to the Academic Policy Committee for consideration later this month and the Senate for approval in mid March. Meanwhile, the University will conduct consultations with staff, students, alumni and external stakeholders including secondary schools, parents, professional bodies and potential employers. The University will submit a progress report on the planning for the four-year normative degree structure to the University Grants Committee at the end of May.

Distinguished Lecture Series
Professor Patrick Dowling, former Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Surrey in the UK, will be on campus to give the first lecture of the Distinguished Lecture Series 2006 at 11am, 17 February, at the Wei Hing Theatre. The lecture title will be "The road to a first-class applied research university". All staff and students are welcome.

New face of University Homepage and e-Portal
The University Homepage, which is designed mainly for external visitors, will be enhanced by adding four new links, namely Staff, Students, Alumni and Applicants so that pertinent news targeted at specific groups can be brought forth with relevant web pages for easy navigation.

The new e-Portal, based on the Blackboard portal, will be revamped by adopting a user-centric approach in that a specific user will log on to a designated portal. For example, a staff member will log on to the Staff portal whereas a student to the Student portal. According to this role-based model, a variety of services pertinent to the different roles can be organized and made available so that personalized, relevant, accurate and up-to-date information can be easily accessed. The revamped University Homepage and e-Portal will be launched soon.

Campus development
The University has completed several facilities improvement projects in recent weeks to alleviate the short-term space shortage problem and enhance campus ambiance. The shortage of teaching venues on campus has been mitigated with the opening of the newly converted 300-seater lecture theatre and the construction of two 80-seater classrooms on the flat roof in the Purple Zone of the Academic Building. The situation will be further improved with the construction of 12 temporary 80-seater classrooms near the Student Hostels on Cornwall Street, to be completed by September. The flat roof on the Academic Building has also been utilized to build proper greenhouses, creating laboratory facilities for teaching and learning.
