| Measures
to recognize staff contributions approved
The Management Board's recommendations for measures to reward the contributions
of University staff were approved at the University Council meeting on
25 March. Effective 1 April 2007, all University staff will receive a
3% pay rise. Full-time University staff will receive a Productivity Award
of one-third of one month's salary, capped at $25,000, in May 2007. A
one-off leave encashment scheme will also be implemented, with payment
to be made in September 2007.

| Preparations
for course on world civilizations
To provide a forum for the exchange of views and sharing of knowledge
among academics from different countries on the development of a new course,
titled "A History of Civilizations", to be offered by the University
under the new four-year curriculum, CityU will organize the International
Conference on Teaching and Learning of World Civilizations on 6 and 7
April in Hong Kong, and on 9 and 10 April in Beijing.

| Mr and Mrs Sze Chi Ching
Lecture Theatre naming ceremony
In appreciation of his contributions to the University
and society, Lecture Theatre 2 at the University Concourse was named in
honour of the outstanding couple at a ceremony on 30 March. Mr
Sze Chi-ching, JP, Chairman of Hang Tung Resources Holding Limited,
is a generous philanthropist who has been recognized for his public service
and contributions to the economic and political development of Hong Kong
and the mainland.

| Stone
laying ceremony at Shenzhen Outpost
A foundation stone laying ceremony for CityU's Shenzhen
Outpost will be held on 3 April at the construction site of the CityU
(Shenzhen) Research Institute Building. Leading officials from Shenzhen
and CityU will officiate at the ceremony, including Mr Liu Zhongpu,
Director of Shenzhen Bureau of Science, Technology & Information;
Ms Qiu Xuan, Vice Director General of the Administratiave
Office of Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park; Mr Chung Shui-ming,
Council Chairman of CityU; and Professor H K Chang, CityU
President. The Outpost will be a base for the University's applied research,
incubation and teaching activities on the mainland.

| First delegation
to Eastern Europe
A high-level CityU delegation recently completed a ground-breaking visit
to Eastern Europe. During the trip from 15 to 25 March, the delegation
visited six major universities in the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary,
Bulgaria and Romania and signed seven institutional-level agreements on
academic collaboration and student exchange with four top universities.

| Technology
transfer of applied research
Contributing the outcomes of applied research to society is one of CityU's
foremost agendas, and participating in technology exhibitions is an excellent
way to initiate technology transfer. CityU researchers will showcase their
latest research outcomes in Hong Kong and Geneva in April. At the International
ICT Expo 2007 to be held from 14 to 17 April in the Hong Kong Convention
and Exhibition Centre, researchers will introduce their innovative projects
on networking, wireless communications and telecommunications. From 18
to 22 April, CityU's applied research will reach an international audience
when three of our major research projects will be displayed in Geneva
at the 35th International Exhibition of Invention, New Techniques and
Products.

| Valuable
classical Korean works in Chinese
The Library has recently acquired two valuable sets of Korean collected
works written in classical Chinese. One is a 3,000-volume collection of
over 1,000 Korean authors' work in the fields of philosophy, history,
literature and others, and the other is a 100-volume of travel records
written by Korean diplomatic envoys chronicling what they saw and heard
during their journeys to Peking during the Chosun Dynasty. To promote
these important collections, an opening ceremony followed by a seminar
will be held on 3 April. Professors from Fudan University, Korea University
and Konyang University will share their views on "The Rapport between
China and Korea in History". An exhibition of the two collections
in the Library lobby will open on the same day and continue until 20 May.

| Audit Committee's
responsibilities
The Council has approved Terms of Reference and associated responsibilities
of the Audit Committee covering all the operations of the University and
the Group including wholly-owned and subsidiary companies.

| External
appointments
Professor Peter Malanczuk, Dean of the School of Law,
has been appointed Panel Member of the Beijing Arbitration Commission,
to serve from 13 February to 27 September 2007. He was also appointed
Visiting Professor of the School of Law, Renmin University of China, from
March 2007 to March 2010.

| Kudos
Two young scholars in the Faculty of Science and Engineering have recently
earned international accolades with their research projects. Dr
Dai Lin, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic
Engineering, received the Best Paper Award in Physical layer/Media Access
Control layer track (PHY/MAC) at the 2007 IEEE Wireless Communications
and Networking Conference. Dr Michael Chan Chi-wang,
Assistant Professor of the Department of Biology and Chemistry, received
the 2007 Mitsui Chemicals Catalysis Science Award of Encouragement.

| More kudos
Eunice Lai Mei-ling and Vicky Lo Hiu-yan,
final-year student of the Department of Accountancy and Department of
Economics and Finance respectively, received the Silver Award in the first
"Outstanding Financial Planning Awards for Hong Kong Undergraduates"
contest organized by the American International Assurance Company (Bermuda)
Limited.
