Cell-based bioassay platform for rapid toxicity testing

 

Monitoring pollution conditions in water systems is important for human health and the environment. Conventional techniques for toxicity testing of sewage water require the use of numerous experimental animals, which has ethical and cost concerns. This method is also costly, and requires time and human resource due to complicated culturing facilities.

In this project we will apply a series of fluorescent probes in fish cells to detect cell viability and subcellular responses. Our method can quantify cellular toxicity by measuring fluorescent intensity. With the help of a newly developed cell-based bioassay platform, we can determine the toxicity of environmental samples accurately and rapidly and reveal cell response at low cost. The cell-based assay platform will not harm the experimental animals that are used in traditional toxicity assays.
