CityU at Education and Careers Expo 2003

Karen Lai

The City University booth proved popular with visitors to this year's Education and Careers Expo, held in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 20 to 23 February. Under the theme of "Developing its strengths, linking the world", the University showcased its achievements in teaching, research, student development, research facilities, as well as its commitment to serving the community. Faculty members, admission officers and student ambassadors were on hand for consultation on a wide range of associate degree, bachelor's degree and postgraduate programmes.

A highlight of the CityU presentation was six seminars on the curricula, admission requirements and career prospects of different programmes. Topics included "Not Just Another Computer Science Programme", "Training a New Generation of Creative Media Artists", and "Careers in Legal Practice". Talks on CityU's associate degrees, the part-time BBA conversion programme for higher diploma/associate degree graduates, and alternative ways to study law were also featured.

Two new taught postgraduate programmes also attracted attention: the Master of Science in Multimedia Information Technology and the Master of Science in Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology. The former is tailor-designed for IT professionals who want to keep up with the latest trends in the multimedia and information technology industry, and the latter is targeted at applied scientists and engineers who wish to pursue in-depth study of materials engineering and nanotechnology, considered essential for the future development of Hong Kong industry.

Designed as a towering university city, the Higher Education Pavilion, which was jointly organized by the eight local tertiary institutions funded by the University Grants Committee, was the largest booth at the Expo. This is the seventh year the UGC-funded institutions have collaborated to stage an all-round exhibition at the Education and Careers Expo, which is jointly organized by the Labour Department and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. As the premier event of its kind in Hong Kong, the Expo aims to promote lifelong learning by providing a channel for students, graduates and the general population to obtain up-to-date information on education, careers, and training opportunities.
