CityU Athletes bring home the gold

Grace Ho

Another year of arduous training has paid off for CityU athletes. In the 2002-03 Hong Kong Post-Secondary Colleges Athletic Association (HKPSCAA) competition, CityU teams displayed their prowess, clinching championship titles in women's basketball, squash and table-tennis, as well as men's badminton, basketball, soccer and squash. Respectively, the overall standing of CityU teams was first runner-up and champion.

CityU seized top place with results ranging from second runner-up and above in 12 out of 19 HKPSCAA events this year (see table below). For three years straight, CityU has reigned champion in men's basketball and badminton and women's table-tennis at the annual inter-collegiate sports competition.

The Physical Education (PE) Section of the Student Development Services (SDS) held a prize presentation ceremony and dinner on 28 May. Professor Edmond Ko, Vice-President for Undergraduate Education and Dean of Students, congratulated the athletes and their coaches on their remarkable performance. He also encouraged the students to get through difficult times in a competitive world with strength and determination, "Be a tough cookie! Remember: 'When the going gets tough, the tough get going.' "

Toasting the teams, Mrs Dorothy Davies, Associate Director of the SDS (PE), thanked them for their hard work. 'At CityU, we promote excellence in sports, but not just to win championships. It's part of our philosophy of whole-person education," she added. "What's most important is that our student athletes learn to put the CityU teams' motto-- 'Be the best that we can be' in motion, not just in sports, but in all kinds of competitions in life."

Each year, the PE Section elects the University's best male and female athletes to be honoured for their outstanding results and contributions. This year's two winners, are Mr Vincent Cheung, captain of the men's squash team, and Miss Wong Choi-ki, captain of the women's basketball and table-tennis teams. Both winners insisted that they owe their success to their teammates and coaches. Miss Wong Choi-ki was also named Best Sportswoman of the Year by the HKPSCAA.

"I have learned and gained a lot of experience in sports and at CityU. Although I am graduating this year, I am not leaving the CityU sports teams. Instead, I will continue to participate by serving as a trainer, sharing my skills and experiences with our fresh young athletes," said Miss Wong. 'In future, I hope I can fulfill my dream of pursuing a higher degree in Sports Studies and contribute to the promotion of sports to more young people in Hong Kong."
