BuiltExpo 2005 showcases students' "sustainable development" masterpieces

Division of Building Science and Technology (BST) presented BuiltExpo 2005 on campus on 8 and 9 April  to mark the 12th anniversary of its annual final-year student project competition and exhibition, launched in 1994.  Over 80 masterpieces in building and construction are showcased in this year's demonstration of the University's concern for sustainable development in Hong Kong.

With the theme “Sustainable Development: Hong Kong Perspective”, the two-day Expo features the designs of high-rise office developments, light-boxes, electronic go-down buildings, a pharmaceutical factory and an office laboratory -- all based on real-life construction and property development projects. “Sustainable development is a global goal that addresses the importance of meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. In recognition of this issue, the BST has made an effort to inculcate our students with concern for sustainable development and it is well-reflected in their final-year projects. The competition and exhibition aims to support our students’ out-of-classroom learning and provide a good opportunity for them to show their work to potential employers and to the public,” said Mrs Julie Mo, BST Head.

The Expo showcases the final-year projects by the students of four building-related Associate of Science degree programmes: Architectural Studies; Building Services Engineering; Construction Engineering and Management; and Surveying. Focusing on “green”

initiatives, energy efficiency and factors such as the reusability of materials, natural lighting energy and ventilation based on legislative requirements, the students adopted environmentally responsible approaches in their designs. Tied in with the Expo are activities including the “Student Projects of the Year” Competition, an opening ceremony and award presentation, a poster design competition and technical seminars delivered by distinguished academics and building experts.

BuiltExpo was opened by the Honourable Leung Chun-ying, Member of the Executive Council, Hong Kong SAR; Professor Y S Wong, Acting President, CityU; Mr Pau Shiu-hung, Chairman of CityU’s Divisional Advisory Committee, BST; and Professor Richard Ho, Dean of Undergraduate Education at CityU.

“The Division is maintaining very close links with the industry,” Professor Wong said. “Through these links, our colleagues know exactly what industry expects and administer our curriculum in view of its applicability to industrial needs. The projects resulting from the competition are, therefore, practical in nature and closely related to the work actually performed by industry.”

The exhibition is held in the Atrium, Purple Zone, 4/F, Academic Building, CityU, on 8 April, from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. and 9 April, from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
