Pursuing studies at the University of Oxford

Fouzia Zafar

I graduated from CityU in July 2004 with First Class Honours in the Bachelor of Laws (LLB).

I completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) exams in May 2005. I have spent most of my life in Hong Kong and have been enriched by a culture and way of life that differ from my home country of Pakistan.

As there is so much to learn, I am now seizing the chance to experience the world from yet a different perspective. Starting from October 2005, I will undertake further studies in the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) programme at the University of Oxford, one of the most esteemed master-level's qualifications in the common law world. I see this as a crucial step in my education, future career and development as a person.

My studies at CityU have prepared me well for the challenges that lie ahead. The LLB programme is rich and diverse, directly addressing the requirements of the legal profession and offering a range of outstanding electives. The programme was challenging and demanding. It fostered my intellectual growth and equipped me with practical skills in law.

CityU's School of Law is dedicated to providing endless opportunities to students for personal development. I was very active throughout my LLB studies. I participated in two prestigious law moots: the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, which was held in Vienna; and the national rounds of the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Competition. I was also the captain of CityU's English Debating Team in my third year. As a result of all my experiences I am much more rounded intellectually, socially and creatively.

The LLB and PCLL programmes attract students from a range of backgrounds. I have made many lifelong friends who have helped make my four years of study truly enjoyable and memorable.

I also feel fortunate to have been taught and guided by some of the best academic staff members. Their guidance and support have instilled in me much self-confidence and motivation to succeed. I am particularly grateful to Mr C Raj Kumar, who has provided me with tremendous support over the years and was the source of encouragement for me to apply to Oxford.

I am thrilled by the opportunity to study at Oxford since it is the perfect place to get  international exposure. Oxford is my first choice not just because it is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious universities, but also because I will have the chance to engage with the brightest people from all around of the world, to study in the midst of amazing historical sites, and to acquire deeper and wider knowledge from languages and cultures of other countries. A single experience can provide so much knowledge and exposure.

At Oxford, I will be joining Magdalen College. My research focus will be on globalization, development and human rights. I would like to investigate how developed and rule-of-law based societies such as Hong Kong can participate in developmental and human rights processes of developing countries.

I believe CityU students are truly privileged to have an excellent learning environment. With hard work and commitment we can all succeed. I look forward to sharing my experience at Oxford with fellow students who plan to pursue studies overseas.
