The Chinese Civilisation Centre (CCIV) at CityU will host an exhibition entitled “Pursuing Perfection: Works of Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute” at the CityU Gallery from 18 February to 1 May, showcasing 50 pieces of exquisite art produced by renowned teachers from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute.

This exhibition exemplifies CityU’s commitment to promoting art and culture among staff, students and the general public.

“Jingdezhen has a history of over 1,000 years and is famous

for making ceramics for the former Chinese emperors and royal family,” said Professor Cheng Pei-kai, CCIV Director. “The artists’ style is unique and sets an interesting example for us to appreciate.”

The works on display, dating back to 1981, exhibit a high level of creativity and are executed in a variety of styles. They include Rhythm of Spring (2005) and Sea Breeze (1998) by Professor Qin Xilin, President of Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute; Calla Lily (2005) by Zhang Wenbing; Nation Character and Style (1990) by Zhu Legeng; Vase of Attack (2003) by Yu Yong; The Dawn (2006) by Tu Zhihao; and A Set of Softness (2004) by Yu Hong.

The pieces reveal a vibrant mix of modern art and traditional Chinese culture via an integration of Chinese calligraphy and painting, demonstrating the innovative spirit of Jingdezhen ceramic arts. In particular, The Rhythm of Spring, using a Chinese folk style of painting, reveals an intense and unique sense of regional culture.

The opening ceremony was held on 17 February. Officiating guests included Professor Qin; Professor Y S Wong, Vice-President (Administration), CityU; Professor Leung Tin-pui, Vice-President (Student Development) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPU); and Mr Yeung Chun-tong, Director of University Museum and Art Gallery, University of Hong Kong (HKU).

CityU is collaborating with HKPU and HKU to help promote ceramic art to the public. While CityU is playing host to the ceramics exhibition, HKPU and HKU will organize a workshop and a seminar, respectively, on ceramic art at a later date.

Established in 1998, CCIV offers a variety of courses and seminars on Chinese art and culture to help CityU students broaden their intellectual horizons on subjects of cultural interest and deepen their understanding of Chinese cultural heritage.

The exhibition will be on display at the CityU Gallery, located on Level 6 of the University’s Amenities Building, from 10 am to 7 pm every day. All are welcome to attend. For enquiries, please call 2194 2477.
