President bolsters communication with students and alumni

Michelle Leung & Jenny Kwan

Professor Way Kuo, President of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), met with representatives of the Convocation and CityU Postgraduate Association (CUPA) recently to increase communication and mutual understanding.

Professor Kuo had a dinner with
Mr Patrick Lee Chung-wah, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Convocation, and 10 members of the committee on 25 June. It was the first time Professor Kuo had met with representatives of the Convocation since assuming the presidency. When outlining his future plans, Professor Kuo said alumni affairs were high on his agenda. He also told the group they should be proud of being a member of the CityU community.

The representatives were all supportive of Professor Kuo’s plan to increase the proportion of alumni donations to 25% within 10 years and promised to take the necessary steps to achieve this goal. The Convocation aims to strengthen the alumni database and increase the number of participants in alumni activities.

On 24 July, Professor Kuo attended the Welcome Dinner to the New President cum Inauguration Ceremony of CUPA Executive Committee. More than 20 CUPA members and a number of guests participated in the event, including Mr Zhang Xueli, Division Chief of the Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Professor David Tong Shuk-yin, CityU’s Deputy President; Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Business; Mr Chan Wai-to, Senior Lecturer of the School of Continuing and Professional Education; and Mr Richard Fong, Vice President of Clover Group International Ltd.

Professor Kuo said many people had told him before he arrived that CityU was an energetic university and he now shared this sentiment. “I feel excited when participating in student activities,” he said. “CityU is a place which touches people.” He again asserted that he would continue to work with staff and students to promote CityU as a world-class institution.

Ms Chris Choi Yuet-ming, CUPA President, said Professor Kuo’s high academic standing and broad vision would push the University’s research achievements to an even higher international standard.

Ms Mandi Leung Hay-man, Council member and 2006-08 President of CUPA, said students had been looking forward to Professor Kuo’s leadership. “We hope Professor Kuo will elevate CityU to new heights and develop more outstanding professionals for Hong Kong,” she said.

In addition, Professor Kuo had a lunch meeting with the Students’ Union Executive Committee on 14 July to increase communication with students and further understand their needs.
