Informative GE Fair helps guide course selection

Eliza Lee

The General Education Fair (GE Fair) was held at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) to introduce 10 General Education courses to be offered this semester and to boost students’ understanding of the programme. It took place on 12-13

and 16 January in the Academic Building and the Student Residence respectively.

The fair was organised by the Office of Vice-President (Student Affairs) and Education Development Office to present the objectives and contents of each course and to help students select the most suitable. Twenty student representatives who have taken the GE courses were invited to discuss their educational experience and course details with participants. GE experts Professor A. Reza Hoshmand and Dr Susan Gano-Phillips answered enquiries and provided advice.

Professor Hoshmand said GE programmes provided the perfect opportunity for students to study outside their own discipline and discover their interests and develop their sense of self. Dr Gano-Phillips encouraged students to select subjects divergent from their major. “GE courses bring a breadth of experiences and have practical applications for students, therefore improving their career prospects,” she said.

Daniel Man Ka-ming, a Year 3 student from the Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics, recommended to arts students the course “Science and Technology: from Past to Future”, which he had taken last year. “The course introduces science and engineering concepts through simple experiments and I had the chance to make wine in the biology l

aboratory. Science relates to everyday life and the science knowledge gained from the course is helpful for my future career in translation field,” said Daniel.

Nelson Lai Jing-xun, a Year 1 student from the School of Law, said the course “Psychology for Young Professionals” allowed him to develop skills to understand himself and connect with people. “My work will require me to deal with people’s personal problems and this course developed my ability to cooperate with people and open communication channels,” said Nelson.

The four-year curriculum will be implemented in 2012. CityU will offer students more opportunities to integrate and diversify their education experiences. More than 40 GE courses are expected to be launched under the new structure.

The GE courses offered this semester focus on three divisional areas of study, namely Study of Societies, Social and Business Organisation; Arts and Humanities; and Science and Technology. For details of each course, please visit: http://vpue.cityu.edu.hk/ge/v3/table.php?role=student .
