The Secure Mobile Messaging project developed by the College of Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has won the Excellent Product Award at the 11th China Hi-Tech Fair, highlighting CityU’s exemplary research track record.

The award was presented to outstanding products selected from around 300 technology projects submitted by leading Hong Kong and mainland universities and research institutes.

Led by Dr Duncan Wong Shek, Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, the Secure Mobile Messaging project is a highly-secure and user-friendly software tool that allows users to send and receive encrypted SMS (Short Message Service) messages with protection from information leaks. It provides user-to-receiver encrypted protection of SMS messages during transmission and storage. Users can shift easily between regular SMS mode and secure SMS mode, according to their needs.

In addition, CityU received the Excellent Pavilion Award and the Excellent Organiser Award. It marked the fourth and seventh consecutive years respectively that CityU had won these two awards for its outstanding organisational work and well-designed exhibition booth.

“As the largest and the most influential technology exhibition on the mainland, the China Hi-Tech Fair is regarded as one of the most important events in the industry. Winning these awards serves as a testament to CityU’s prominence and achievements in innovative technology and scientific research,” said Mr Wong Hon-yee, Associate Vice-President (Knowledge Transfer).

The 11th China Hi-Tech Fair was held at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre from 16 to 21 November, attracting around 3,000 organisations from all over the world. CityU displayed 27 high-tech projects developed by the College of Science and Engineering, various applied research centres in Shenzhen and, in its first year of participation, the new School of Energy and Environment. The projects on display encompassed various disciplines, including energy and environmental protection, information technology, electronics and telecommunications, bio-medical technology, new materials and surface science as well as food and environment testing. CityU’s Knowledge Transfer Office worked closely with the Shenzhen Research Institute of CityU in the planning of the exhibition, with the goal of promoting science and technology applications that benefit society.
