Secondary students learn to apply science through forensic science training scheme

Ellen Chan

A six-day scheme on forensic science organised by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (The HKFYG) gave senior secondary school students a chance to learn the basic theories behind forensic science, crime scene investigation and analytical chemistry.

The aim was to strengthen the participants’ foundation of knowledge in Science Education for the new 334 academic structure.

In the scheme, around 100 students in two groups collected evidence at a simulated crime scene under the supervision of CityU professors from the Department of Biology and Chemistry, drew inferences from lab tests and reported their findings.

CityU is the first university in Hong Kong to launch such a forensic science programme as a Gateway Education course, according to Dr Michael Lam Hon-wah, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Chemistry.

Ms Aggie Ng Lai-kam, the unit-in-charge of The HKFYG Centre for Creative Science & Technology said that science is closely related to our daily lives. The scheme could arouse students’ curiosity in science and let them enjoy the hands-on learning experience. Dr Lam also added that, through this scheme, the students were able to train their logical thinking and develop an awareness of the practical aspects of science knowledge as well as the element of fun in discovering new knowledge.
