CityU celebrates conservation success with horseshoe crabs

Over 500 horseshoe crabs raised by 200 local secondary students under a programme organised by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) were released into the wild on 14 July. The programme was a collaboration with the Ocean Park Academy, Hong Kong, and the Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong.

Over the past five months the students have learnt the right set-up and know-how for raising horseshoe crabs, especially how to record and monitor the crabs’ growth, under the supervision of CityU researchers. The programme aims to bolster student interest in conservation and preserve endangered species.
Electronic chips inserted into 18 selected crabs will track their growth and survival rates, according to Dr Paul Shin Kam-shing, programme supervisor and an associate professor at CityU’s Department of Biology and Chemistry.
