Nearly 40 veterinarians took part in a four-day clinical programme organised at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 25-28 March to study the latest medical treatments for trauma and fractures in horses and other large animals.

Co-organised by CityU, The Hong Kong Jockey Club and AOVET, the programme featured lectures and clinical tests. Using a problem-oriented teaching approach, the programme helps participants better understand the diagnosis and treatments of fractures as well as the use of surgical tools such as splints for fixation. Sharing sessions were also arranged for participants to exchange ideas on real and complex cases they have encountered.

Dr Howard Wong Kai-hay, Executive Director of CityU’s Life Sciences Programmes, indicated that there has been a significant advancement in veterinary science in Hong Kong. From only 13 veterinarians 20 years ago, Hong Kong today has more than 600. At the same time, Hong Kong has only seven veterinary specialists. To promote the development of local veterinary practice, more opportunities in specialised training should be provided, as well as the scale and number of continuous professional programmes.

“CityU’s School of Veterinary Medicine will actively offer related courses and professional services to help local veterinarians enhance their professional quality, competence and credibility,” he added.
