The research achievements of staff and students from the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) were showcased at the Discovery and Innovation Gala 2015 from 24 to 25 June.
Officiating guests at the opening ceremony were Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, Professor Arthur Ellis, CityU’s Provost, and Professor Yan Hong, Dean of CSE.

“CityU is committed to grooming students’ discovery and innovative spirit and encouraging them to create new knowledge,” Professor Kuo said at the ceremony. “I am excited to see the various teaching and research achievements of the University at the Gala. These achievements are direct outcomes of the innovative ideas of the teachers and students shown in the College of Science and Engineering.”
He said the exhibition would provide more opportunities for collaboration between the University and various sectors; boost technology transfer; enhance CityU’s strengths in science research; bolster the advancement of related industries; and develop society.
In past years the exhibition used to present undergraduates’ achievements. This year the College expanded its scope to include the achievements of its faculty and researchers. It also invited representatives from related industries.
Professor Yan said the Gala would help the local community better understand CSE’s strengths and expertise. He added that the College was also considering presenting the projects completed by graduate students in future exhibitions.
CSE is focused on promoting innovation and encouraging teachers and students to conduct applied research. The College also makes good use of its patents and intellectual rights for collaboration with industry in order to boost knowledge transfer.
Professor Yan said the College wished to further enhance its professional education, develop technology innovation and foster connections with industry. The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of local industries and bring actual benefits to society.
The two-day exhibition showcased creative and practical projects from CSE’s nine departments and one division:
  • Data-Driven Computational Manga – Users can produce their own manga simply by in-putting photos, pictures and dialogue boxes.
  • Developing an Aid to Help the Visually Impaired to Navigate at MTR Platform – Visually-impaired persons can use this mobile app to find their location and the nearest escalator in an MTR station for safer and more convenient transportation services.
  • Wheelchair Virtual Reality System – Applicable to various models of wheelchairs and equipped with information on different roads, the system can help users practise how to operate a wheelchair such as adjusting its speed.
  • Wireless Technology for Improving Worker Safety in Construction Sites – Integrating multiple sensors and wireless technologies, the system can monitor whether a construction worker has put on safety equipment and works in a designated area.

During the two days of the exhibition, CSE also held seminars for industry practitioners to discuss the latest development of industry. It also organised information sessions that detailed the teaching and research in the College.
