Some 140 participants joined the “CityU Alumni Reunion @ Shanghai 2015” organised by the Alumni Relations Office of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) with event partners CityU Convocation and the CityU Shanghai Alumni Chapter on 17 July.

During the evening programme, Professor Way Kuo, University President, shared news about CityU’s latest developments and alumni achievements, including the latest generous donation of HK$100 million from Dr Li Dak-sum, an acclaimed business leader, in support of CityU’s efforts in research and education in veterinary medicine.

The President also expressed his delight that the toxicology testing company founded by CityU alumni Mr Eric Chen Zixiang and Dr Chen Xueping had won the Grand Prix at the 43rd Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions. Wider public recognition of CityU’s commitment to the development of professional education and research, as well as its contribution to the development of Hong Kong, was due to such achievements, said Professor Kuo.

Mr Vincent Lo Hong-sui, Founder of Shanghai Xintiandi and Chairman of Shui On Group, shared with alumni his experience in leading a flourishing business in Shanghai. He was speaking at an interactive forum titled “Exploring Shanghai – The Present and Future”. The forum was facilitated by alumnus Mr Clovis Lau Koong-yep, Chairman of CityU Convocation and Council Member.

Mr Lo viewed Shanghai as a vibrant city filled with opportunities. He encouraged alumni to enhance their understanding of mainland development and identify a role they may adopt. He also shared how he applied the principles of Chinese Kung Fu known as Wing Chun in his daily life philosophy and when managing his business. The alumni present were impressed by his sharing and actively interacted with him.

Other University representatives included Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development & External Relations), Professor Yan Houmin, Dean of the College of Business (CB), Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Alumni Relations), Dr Hao Gang, Associate Vice-President (Development), and Professor Wayne Yu, Assistant Dean of CB.

Alumni contribute to the University through various channels. That evening, participants witnessed the inauguration of the “CityU Shanghai Alumni Chapter”, a platform formed by enthusiastic alumni in Shanghai that aims to help strengthen alumni networks. The President also presented souvenirs to alumni Mr Andrew Fan Ka-fai, Mr Edward Chan Chi-kong and Mr Wilson Chung Kwok-yi for supporting the CityU Foundation. Since the Foundation’s establishment, the University has received enthusiastic support from our friends and donors including alumni. Their contributions have made a difference to the learning experience of students, and are vital to the development of the University.

Right after the reunion, the President shared University updates with some 70 alumni at another alumni gathering in Beijing on 18 July organised by the CityU Beijing Alumni Association under the lead of Mr Wilson Chung, its convener.
