Generous donor supports elite CityU students

Lecture Theatre 401 in Amenities Building and Lecture Theatre 17 in Academic 1 at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have been named "Herbalgy Lecture Theatre" and "Wong To Yick Tong Lecture Theatre" respectively in appreciation of the support and generous donations to the University made by Mr Wong Tin-chee and his family members.

Mr Wong’s generous gift has helped to set up scholarships that enable outstanding students with limited financial resources to join overseas exchange programmes.

The naming ceremony on 22 August was officiated by Mr Wong; Professor Way Kuo, CityU President; and Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations).

The event was attended by Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs); Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration); Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations); and the family and friends of Mr Wong.

Mr Wong is a registered Chinese medicine practitioner, a philanthropist and a successful entrepreneur. Motivated by his parents, Mr Wong aspired to practice traditional Chinese medicine and advocate preventive treatment. He is currently Executive Director of both Herbalgy Pharmaceutical Limited and Wong To Yick Wood Lock Ointment Limited, and the Founding Director of the Caring for Children Foundation.

On behalf of the University, Professor Kuo thanked Mr Wong for his generous donations. “CityU possesses transformational principles. For each dollar we receive, we will add a value of $10 or even $100. The students who receive scholarships will contribute more than they have received to CityU and Hong Kong.”

In his address at the ceremony, Mr Wong said it was wonderful to help more students to achieve their dreams. “I hope my actions will inspire students to be more caring, empathetic and helpful,” he said.

He also talked about his long-term relationship with CityU and the impressive qualities of CityU students and teachers. He shared his personal mottos: "Like gentlemen archers competing with civility, youngsters must first aim high in their studies."

Professor Lee thanked Mr Wong for his staunch support for CityU’s internationalisation initiatives. “Mr Wong’s generosity is helping many outstanding students who did not have the means to go abroad to see the world.”

A tai-chi hip-hop performance by CityU Danso and a "thank you" video shared by a scholarship recipient currently studying in the US expressed the heartfelt gratitude of the University and the students.
Herbalgy Lecture Theatre located on the 4th floor of Amenities Building has an area of 280 square metres and a seating capacity of 300. Wong To Yick Tong Lecture Theatre located on 4th floor of Academic 1 has an area of 210 square metres and a seating capacity of 200. Both newly named lecture theatres serve as teaching facilities in the University and are widely used for lectures, seminars and international conferences.
