Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Secretary for Transport and Housing, Hong Kong SAR Government, discussed the Transport and Housing Bureau’s recent initiatives on mobility and connectivity in Hong Kong at a seminar conducted by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 22 September.

The seminar, part of the CityU Outreach (CUO) project, was held by the Office of the Provost.

Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, said in his opening remarks that the University was mobile and connected to society.

“We mobilise our students, faculty and staff, and we hope that we can mobilise the society to keep it moving fast,” he said.

Professor Kuo added that the Discovery-enriched Curriculum encouraged innovation and creativity. While students and faculty did research, they connected the University to society.

A speech on the theme “Mobility and Connectivity: Progress, Challenges and Constraints” presented by Professor Cheung gave an overview of the transport infrastructure, regional and global connectivity, maritime and aviation services in Hong Kong.

In the Q&A session moderated by Professor Linda Li Che-lan, Department of Public Policy, Professor Cheung discussed topics including constraints on using automatic vehicles in Hong Kong, various housing schemes in Hong Kong and Singapore, the balance between congestion and connectivity, and the challenges of using bicycles as a way of mobility, among others.

In his closing remarks, Mr David Ai Chuan, Director of Knowledge Transfer, stated that the CUO event had provided a platform for the free flow of information exchange that could help CityU researchers and students understand the constraints and challenges in Hong Kong, and change the way we frame problems and potential solutions.

CUO is an innovative institution-level initiative designed to bring more CityU scholars and their expertise in contact with partners in industry, government, NGOs and the local community to benefit society. Knowledge transfer is an integral component in CityU's mission to serve the society that supports it.

Mr Yau Shing-mu, Under Secretary for Transport and Housing (Transport), Ms Patricia Woo, Political Assistant to Secretary for Transport and Housing, Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, Vice-President (Student Affairs), Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff, deans of colleges and schools, and heads of departments also attended the seminar.
