Around 200 students from 20 elite secondary schools participated in the “Discovery & Innovation Debating Challenge” at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 2 December.

The event was organised by CityU and Young Post, South China Morning Post for the fifth year running. The aim is to enhance the students’ understanding of CityU and its innovative approach to learning and to sharpen students’ debating and critical thinking skills.

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Samuel Ho Mun-yin, Associate Provost (Institutional Initiatives), introduced the students to CityU’s unique Discovery-enriched Curriculum (DEC).

“The DEC encourages our students to make their own discoveries while studying with us, pursue their own interests, and experience the excitement of studying what they are most interested in. The DEC is broad, international and inclusive; and it offers students a great deal of freedom,” Professor Ho said.

During the event, participants toured CityU’s state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, including the Gateway Education (GE) Laboratory, the Omnimedia Digital Newsroom, the Underwater Robotics, and the moot court, among others.

Meanwhile, faculty members introduced CityU’s undergraduate programmes, the characteristics of CityU’s colleges and schools, and information about career development.

In addition, a debating demonstration by the Hong Kong World Schools (International) Debating Team showcased high-level debating skills. Participants were then divided into 10 teams to debate different motions.

The adjudicators reported being impressed by the debaters’ preparation and critical-thinking skills.

Kerwin Tong Wai-chi, a Form 4 student at Pui Ching Middle School, was participating in such event for the first time. “It’s worth joining. I learned about debating skills and I broadened my academic exposure. I am interested in medical school, but after today’s programme, I find that I am also interested in law. I will re-consider my undergraduate pursuit,” he said.
