City University of Hong Kong (CityU) received a donation from Ms Chau Sin-wo to promote the University advancement and set up the Chau Sin Wo Scholarships for the School of Law. One of the classrooms at CityU has been named “Chau Sin Wo Classroom” in appreciation of Ms Chau’s generous support.

The Scholarships set up with an endowment fund will be presented to Year 2 law undergraduates each year to recognise their excellent academic performance and moral conduct.

The donation ceremony held on 12 December was attended by Ms Chau; Dr Edward Leong Che-hung; President Way Kuo of CityU; Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations); Professor Lin Feng, Acting Dean of the School of Law; Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development and Alumni Relations); student representatives from the School of Law and other guests.

In his welcoming address, President Kuo expressed his heartfelt thanks to Ms Chau for her generous donation. “Making determined efforts to strive for success and change her destiny, Ms Chau is a role model for young people. Her selfless dedication to education, nurturing young people and charity is admirable,” he said.

Ms Chau appreciated and supported CityU’s direction of development, and hoped that students can apply their knowledge to serve society proactively and faithfully. “It is my greatest wish and pursuit to try my very best to contribute to the cause of education,” said Ms Chau.

A plaque with the Chinese characters meaning “Building a harmonious and inclusive society with a benevolent heart” was installed at the Chau Sin Wo Classroom to encourage students to practice good deeds and nurture empathy.

Professor Lee presented a certificate of Honorary Vice-President of CityU Foundation to Ms Chau to thank her for supporting the University.

Born in Sichuan, Ms Chau came alone to Hong Kong for work in the 1980s. Starting out as a domestic helper, she worked strenuously and eventually ran a textile business that traded overseas. She established a charity fund in 2014 to nurture more young people to contribute to society.
