The second seminar of the Pro-Chancellor’s Seminar Series, held on 1 March at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), delved into the dynamic realm of “Energy, Environment, and Sustainability: Local Strength and Global Impact”, led by Professor Chen Guohua, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE). The event also celebrated the 15th anniversary of the School's establishment while showcasing some of its noteworthy achievements and ongoing commitment to societal well-being.

Professor Chen commenced by underscoring the youthfulness of the SEE, emphasising that its journey began with the recruitment of dedicated individuals. He acknowledged the collaborative spirit within the academic community, stating, “We could not have achieved what we have without the help of our colleagues in other fields.” Professor Chen asserted that thanks to this collective effort, the School has made significant strides in addressing crucial issues, such as clean water, clean air, a circular economy and climate change.

In recent endeavours, the focus has expanded to include carbon neutrality, automobiles utilising new energy, renewable energy, and Environmental, Social and Governance considerations. “To make the planet better, we need more than pledges. Dramatic action has to be implemented from the collective effort of scientists, engineers, governments and individuals,” he said.

He elaborated on the intricacies of CVD (chemical vapour deposition) coating of NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) and NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminium) cathode particles for excellent stability for lithium-ion batteries. Professor Chen also emphasised the transformative potential of sulphur, highlighting it as a game-changer in the next generation of energy-storage solutions.

Professor Chen revealed plans for a double-degree programme in collaboration with the College of Business (CB), highlighting that students from this integrated programme would gain a comprehensive understanding of technical issues on the environment, enabling them to contribute effectively to addressing them in sustainable ways.

The audience expressed appreciation for the School's achievements and contributions to society. Professor Chan Kalok, Dean of CB, indicated interest in fostering more multidisciplinary cooperation, recognising the potential for holistic problem-solving. Ir the Honourable Chan Siu-hung, Legislative Council Member, applauded the School's contributions and urged collaboration with the government to tackle more challenges, envisioning Hong Kong as an international centre of innovation.

The Pro-Chancellor’s Seminar Series brings together distinguished academics and professionals to share their insights on cutting-edge developments in diverse fields, while providing opportunities for research collaboration and generating impactful insights for the betterment of society.
