CityUHK excels in global academic rankings: Three disciplines in the top 50 for citations, with Computer Science and Materials Science ranked No.1 in Hong Kong

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) continues to demonstrate its academic excellence, securing top positions in the latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) rankings released by Clarivate. Three of CityUHK’s disciplines were ranked among the global top 50 for citation impact, underscoring the University’s academic excellence on the international academic stage.
In the global ranking of 9,718 universities, CityUHK was ranked in the top 300, and was ranked 4th in Hong Kong. Notably, three disciplines were ranked among the global top 50 and the top two in Hong Kong:
- Computer Science: 26th globally, 1st in Hong Kong
- Materials Science: 33rd globally, 1st in Hong Kong
- Engineering: 34th globally, 2nd in Hong Kong
Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor of CityUHK, expressed pride in the University’s outstanding achievements, stating, “CityUHK is committed to excellence in teaching, research and innovation, and in fostering global knowledge exchange and societal progress. We will continue to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and support cutting-edge research to contribute to higher education in Hong Kong and beyond.”
CityUHK is dedicated to fostering a diverse and international academic environment, providing opportunities for faculty and students from around the globe to explore the world. One significant initiative is CityUHK’s collaboration with the University of Cambridge, representing the most substantial postdoctoral collaboration in Asia for both universities, promoting academic exchange and talent mobility.
Additionally, nearly 210 CityUHK scholars were named among the “World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists”, marking the highest proportion of top scientists in Hong Kong based on the overall number of teaching and research staff at the University. Furthermore, 32 CityUHK scholars were named “Highly Cited Researchers 2024” by Clarivate. When calculated as a proportion of the University’s overall faculty and research staff, CityUHK has been ranked first in Hong Kong for nine consecutive years, demonstrating the outstanding influence of CityUHK’s faculty and research team in the global academic community.
The ESI rankings survey more than 11,000 journals across 22 broad disciplines, ranking scientists, institutions, countries and journals worldwide based on metrics such as publication volume, total citations and average citation rates.
