A prestigious new programme titled “Fostering Innovation for Resilience and Sustainable Transformation” spearheaded by CityUHK has been officially endorsed by the UNESCO. This global initiative is designed to drive innovation in sustainability, advance measurable progress toward the UN’s SDGs.

CityUHK has achieved new milestones in research, with 10 outstanding scholars receiving funding from the RGC's Collaborative Research Fund, totaling over HK$60 million—marking a record high for the University.

Dedicated to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), researchers at CityUHK discovered that transitioning to clean cooking fuels can significantly promote multiple SDGs, including affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), poverty elimination (SDG 1) and reduced inequality (SDG 10).

CityUHK held its first-ever STEM Career Fair 2025 on 17 January. 71 companies across 16 industries participated in the fair, offering over 3,300 job opportunities for students. It encouraged students to explore their career aspiration and learn about the latest industry trends, and provided an excellent platform for employers to engage with budding talent in the realm of computing, energy and environment, engineering, science and technology.

CityUHK marked a significant moment in global sustainability by welcoming His Excellency Mr Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the UN and President of the Assembly and Chair of the GGGI, to speak at the Distinguished Lecture during the SEE's 15th Anniversary Symposium on 6 December. His presence underscored CityUHK’s progress in advancing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and its role in connecting international sustainability initiatives with Hong Kong’s environmental leaders.

A delegation from the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China visited CityUHK on 30 October. The two sides exchanged views on the latest developments in various fields, such as technology and innovation, and explored opportunities for strengthening cooperation, including CityUHK’s participation in the construction of the National Centre of Technology Innovation.

Three research projects by CityUHK outstanding scholars have been awarded funding under the 2024/25 NSFC and RGC Collaborative Research Scheme, amounting to over HK$8.8 million. The number of funded projects for this exercise at CityUHK was tied for the highest in Hong Kong. Additionally, five CityUHK scholars have been awarded funding from the 2024/25 NSFC/RGC Joint Research Scheme, with total funding exceeding HK$6 million.

Promoting sustainability, championing a green environment and empowering change are fundamental to the academic mission at CityUHK aimed at meeting the UN’s 17 SDGs.

CityUHK is committed to fostering an innovative and interactive educational environment by introducing the team-based learning approach in two pioneering university courses during the summer semester, allowing students and faculty to experience it first-hand in a practical classroom setting.

The pressing need for urgent solutions and approaches to the sustainability emergency dominated the opening keynotes, panel sessions, presentations and an exhibition spearheaded by teams from CityUHK at the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok held between 10 and 13 June.
