CityU Council Chairman Sir Gordon Wu has resigned

The Chairman of the University Council has written to the Government announcing his resignation as Chairman of the Council of City University of Hong Kong. His reason for tendering his resignation was that he wished to avoid a possible conflict of interest arising as a result of his appeal against a previous Town Planning Board decision concerning one of his major projects; the possible conflict of interest arising as a result of the decision of the Board to appoint a member of staff of the University to the appeal panel. For similar reasons, Sir Gordon has also resigned from his honorary professorship at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. We regret Sir Gordon Wu’s decision to resign as Council Chairman but we understand the reasons for his resignation and respect fully his decision. Sir Gordon has contributed significantly to the University’s development during his term of office as Chairman. He has devoted considerable time and energy to the University’s affairs and issues and he will be sorely missed by students and staff.

During Sir Gordon’s tenure, the University has laid the foundation for its future progress and development including plans for the transition to a four year undergraduate curriculum and the expansion of our campus buildings and facilities. The University has already submitted to the UGC its plans for the structure of the new four year degree and construction of our new facilities is about to commence. It is unfortunate that our Council Chairman is leaving at this time but we will continue with our mission to provide quality professional education and to enhance knowledge for the benefit of the community of Hong Kong.
