Chairman of WKK discusses challenges in electronics industry

With the rapid development of the electronics industry, what challenges are facing OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing)? How can OEM make a difference in terms of technology, management and manufacturing?

Mr Senta Wong, Chairman and CEO of Wong’s Kong King International (Holdings) Ltd (WKK), shared his insights into these issues today (29 September) in a talk entitled “Electronics Industry and OEM”, part of the Distinguished Industrialists Lecture Series, organized by the Faculty of Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

“Given the constraints imposed by human resources and facilities, the electronics industry in Hong Kong cannot catch up with competitors in Europe, the US and Japan,” said Mr Wong, who has over 40 years experience in the electronics manufacturing and marketing industry.

“To survive in the ever-changing market, WKK is focusing on the electronics manufacturing service, including the provision of product processing services and a pro-active approach to customers. We decide new products together, targeting market needs,” he said.

This is the fifth lecture since the Faculty launched the series in 2002. Previous speakers have included Professor Chan Kei-biu, Chairman of the Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association, and Dr Geoffrey Yeh Meou-tsen, Chairman of Hsin Chong International Holdings Ltd.

Secondary school teachers and students were invited to the lecture, and the overall aim was to arouse students’ interest in joining the science and engineering profession in the future.

“The aim of the lecture series is to provide a platform for our students to learn from prominent industrialists,” said Professor Chan Chi-hou, Dean of FSE. “Their valuable experience is not something we can learn from textbooks. Students will undoubtedly benefit from the lectures.”

WKK was established in 1975 and became publicly listed in 1989. It is a trading and distribution company supplying capital equipment, materials and services to the printed circuit board industry throughout the world.

Mr Wong has been involved in industrial and commercial activities, and from 1989 to 2001, he served as a member of the Hong Kong – Japan Business Co-operation Committee, appointed by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. He is a member of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong Printed Circuit Association.

In addition, he was Chairman of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and a member of the Hospital Governing Committees of Kwong Wah Hospital and TWGHs Wong Tai Sin Hospital. For his contributions, he was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Government in 2001.
