CityU students design venues for Asia’s first ACM SIGGRAPH Traveling Art Show

Students of the School of Creative Media (SCM) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) have applied their creativity and talent in designing exhibition venues and posters for Asia’s first ACM SIGGRAPH Traveling Art Show.

With 14 years of history, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH) Traveling Art Show is well known in the computer graphics industry. Its Asian debut, from 2 June to 31 July in Hong Kong, features more than 50 masterpieces of 22 world-renowned computer graphic artists.

The roving exhibition is being held in six locations in Hong Kong. CityU will be the second venue and the first educational institution to host the show. The works on display, selected by ACM SIGGRAPH Annual Conference, include interactive installations, 3D installations, 3D photos, digital printed images, multi-media works and animations.

Mr Yim Chun-pang, Teaching Fellow of the SCM and Computer Games Committee Chairman of Hong Kong ACM SIGGRAPH Professional Chapter, hoped the show would promote a deeper understanding of computer graphic design, interactive technology and its application to the local industry. “Through active participation in hosting this traveling show,” he said, “the School of Creative Media can provide valuable opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and foster their linkage with the industry.”

The design of exhibition venues is an integration of architectural arts and technology. Seven students of the SCM have designed some movable wooden display boards which can be assembled into various shapes to fit different features of the venues, thus forming a stylish artwork by themselves.

Another unique design by the students is the “Info-Bar” in the centre of each venue. By simply placing the specially designed exhibition brochure on the interactive table of the “Info-Bar”, the pattern representing each artist shown in the brochure will be detected. Detailed information about the artist will then be projected onto the interactive table of the “Info-Bar”.

Ray Cheung Ho-yin, Year 2 student of the SCM, was glad to participate in this major event, which has given him the chance to develop his potential in venue design. “I feel very happy that we can actually present our design concepts to the visitors,” he said.
