CityU’s Communications & PR Office releases the clarification today
Recent rumours have claimed that City University of Hong Kong will lay off 100 to 200 Instructors, Lecturers and Assistant Professors. Unfortunately, these rumours have tended to distort the true state of affairs, and this has led to a number of misunderstandings.
City University of Hong Kong would like to clarify that, in the personnel review exercise this year, all but 2 relevant cases have been recommended for re-appointment for periods ranging from 6 months to 3 years. Among those reviewed, 20 Instructors were recommended for 6-month extensions; while 13 Instructors, 1 Teaching Fellow, 11 Lecturers and 9 Assistant Professors were recommended for 1-year extensions. A total of 54 contract extensions are shorter than 2 years, which is far below the rumoured number. Also, in the case of the 2 non-reappointments, the two teachers were not dismissed, but had simply finished their contracts of employment. In the coming year, there are only very few expiring employment contracts to be reviewed.
