Pioneer sound artist Christina Kubisch makes Asia debut at CityU

The electromagnetic sound installations of the German sound artist Christina Kubisch will feature at an exhibition at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (CMC) Grand Opening Festival this Saturday (25 February) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

The exhibition, titled “White Walls Have Ears”, marks Ms Kubisch’s debut in Asia. She will conduct her signature “Electrical Walks” (2003 - present) and develop a new version in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Walk is number 39 in the series, and the first in China.

In the work, members of the public walk around the city with an electromagnetic map which, like a musical score, indicates an itinerary covering some of the most interesting magnetic fields in the urban environment.

A seminar titled “Meet the Artist” will be held alongside the “Electrical Walks” on Saturday from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at M1052, L1, in the CMC. The seminar will be conducted in English and is open to the public for free. An opening reception on Saturday at 6:30pm on the 4th floor of the CMC will also be included.

In addition, two electromagnetic sound installations, “Cloud” and “Landscape”, will be exhibited on the 4th floor of the CMC from 27 February to 25 March, Monday to Saturday, 12pm to 8pm. It is open to the public for free. For more information, call 3442 6553 or visit http://cmc.scm.cityu.edu.hk/en/events/white_walls_have_ears.html.

Ms Kubisch belongs to the first generation of sound artists. Trained as a composer, she has developed techniques such as magnetic induction to realise her installations. Since 1986 she has added light as an artistic element to her work with sound. Her work displays an artistic development which is often described as a “synthesis of arts” — the discovery of acoustic space and the dimension of time in the visual arts on one hand, and a redefinition of relationships between material and form in music on the other.

Ms Kubisch has received many awards and grants, including the German Industrial Association award (1988), composition grant of the city of Berlin (2000), Honorary German Sound Art Award (2008), Prix Ars Electronica Honorary Mention Digital Music (2008) and Saarl?ndischer Rundfunk Media Art Award (2009). Her works has been presented worldwide since 1974 in solo exhibitions and performances in galleries and museums in Europe, US, Australia, Japan and South America.
