CityU students provide innovative solutions for everyday problems

?

Have you ever left your flat and suddenly had that gnawing feeling that you forgot to close the windows or turn off the stove, and then headed back home to find everything in order?

A way to solve this problem can be found at an exhibition organised by the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) on 31 May to 1 June. Some 90 outstanding technology projects covering a range of topics will showcase students’ discovery and innovation in solving problems found in daily life.

“The College strives to nurture students’ talents and create applicable knowledge. This exhibition demonstrates the wide spectrum of knowledge that the students have acquired and their ability to apply their knowledge to solve problems in our daily life,” said Professor Lu Jian, Dean of CSE.

Among the items on display is an Android camera car designed by three students from the Department of Electronic Engineering: Johnson Lui Tik-on, Jason Ng Kwok-yin and Chris Lam Kong-fai. The camera car can be controlled remotely by Android devices to capture images or videos around the home, and send them to a user’s handset.

Another item, developed by Katie Pang Tsz-shan, a student from the Department of Computer Science, helps to protect smart phones against phishing with an app called “SiteWatcher on Android”, deploying the anti-phishing service of the SiteWatcher server provided by CityU.

“According to recent research, mobile phone users are three times more susceptible to phishing attacks compared with desktop users. ‘SiteWatcher on Android’ can help examine suspicious URLs and QR codes to check if they lead to fake or malicious sites. Also, the app will warn users when they are visiting phishing sites,” Katie said.

Meanwhile Helen Lam Ping-yu from the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management has fabricated a machine based on European standards for the dynamic strength testing of baby slings.

“A sand bag weighing 15 kilograms will be placed in the carrier to check if there is any damage that will impair its functions after 50,000 cycles of the dynamic strength test. One new feature of my machine is the use of pneumatic cylinders and a pneumatic tank that can help produce a cushioning effect and save electricity,” Helen said.

The exhibition will be held from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Multi-Purpose Rooms on the 4th floor of the Amenities Building at CityU. The exhibits are projects developed by students from eight different departments of CSE, as well as from the Division of Building Science and Technology and the Co-operative Education Centre.

Students will be available in the exhibition to explain the concepts and the unique features of those projects, including live demonstrations.
