A $200 million donation from Mr Yeung Kin-man, a Hong Kong entrepreneur, will support the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), students’ overseas exchanges, and the strategic development of City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

 

This is the first time for Mr Yeung to donate to a university in Hong Kong, and it is the largest donation that CityU has ever received.

 

Mr Yeung, a successful entrepreneur and scientist, is the founder and chief executive of Biel Crystal (HK) Manufactory Limited. There are more than 100,000 employees in his group. Biel is the largest manufacturer in the world of glass covers and touchscreens for mobile phones, and sapphire glass covers for famous Swiss watches.

 

Mr Yeung is dedicated to scientific research enquiry. He has worked on a number of research and development projects with his team. Together they have introduced an array of innovative products to the market.

 

During a guided campus tour, Mr Yeung learnt about, and appreciated, CityU’s emphasis on students, effort in innovation, its dedication to promoting professional education and research excellence, and its determination to advance.

 

Mr Yeung specified that $100 million of his donation should be used for supporting SVM. Since its establishment, SVM has earned widespread support from different sectors in society. In addition to Mr Yeung’s support, SVM has raised hundreds of millions of dollars.

 

Another $50 million from Mr Yeung’s donation will be used for endowed Chair Professorships for a number of departments. The remaining $50 million will support CityU students’ overseas exchanges, which will help CityU to achieve its target of 65% of CityU students going on overseas exchanges, as stated in its Strategic Plan 2015–2020.

 

Mr Yeung believes strongly in the value of overseas exchange. Furthermore, CityU will name Academic 1 in honor of Mr Yeung.

  

Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, said that Mr Yeung’s donation would benefit CityU’s development and its faculty and students. He expressed his sincere gratitude to Mr Yeung on behalf of CityU for his generosity.

 

CityU was determined to pursue excellence, he added, and had gained strong recognition and support from society for its efforts.
