CityU Employers’ Luncheon strengthens ties with industries

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) hosted The Employers’ Luncheon on 30 March and invited representatives from local and multinational enterprises to attend. The event helped to build closer ties and cultivate more opportunities with employers in order to enhance the employability of CityU students.

This is the second year that the luncheon has been held. Close to 300 senior management representatives from a wide spectrum of industries and sectors attended the event, which also featured a student project exhibition displaying students’ excellent achievements.

Dr Michael Chan Yue-kwong, Chairman of Café de Coral Holdings Limited, was the keynote speaker.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Herman Hu Shao-ming, Council Chairman of CityU, stressed the importance of building ties between the University and the business community.

“CityU is committed to cementing new ties with employers in order to enhance the competitiveness of our students, and to nurturing a young, energetic and highly employable workforce that will make Hong Kong a better place to live and work,” he said.

In a speech titled “Management for Millennials”, Dr Chan shared his insights on management.

He said the world had become more globalised and interconnected through mobile devices, adding that organisations were getting flatter and that new employees were expected to possess multiple skills and be able to perform several tasks simultaneously.

He advised the millennial generation to make sure that they maintained a global perspective and a broadened vision, and that they equipped themselves with intelligence, emotional and most importantly, adversity quotients.

“The millennial generation expects the employer to be a mentor, rather than a boss, while management should show a caring attitude to this generation,” Dr Chan said.

Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing, CityU’s Vice-President (Student Affairs), thanked Dr Chan for sharing his insights into management and for offering encouragement to CityU students.

Mr Philip Tsai Wing-chung, Vice-Chairman of Deloitte China, has attended the CityU Employers’ Luncheon for two years in a row.

“The Employers’ Luncheon is a great occasion for me to meet CityU students, to understand their aspirations and to share my experience with them. The Student Project Exhibition, being one of the highlights in the event, enables employers to keep abreast of CityU students’ talents and achievements,” he said. “It’s definitely a wonderful platform that strengthens ties between the University, employers and students!”

The employers in attendance were senior management representatives from a variety of multinational corporations based in Hong Kong and abroad. Among those attending were Deloitte China, Ernst & Young, HSBC, Hang Seng Bank, MTR Corporation, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Nan Fung Group, and many more.

At the exhibition,  over 70 projects showcasing  the achievements in learning and innovation of CityU students were featured. CityU’s unique Discovery-enriched Curriculum encourages students to make good use of the rich resources in innovation and technology made available by the University and spurs the development of creative ideas. Some of the student projects on show include:

·         Wearable Canvas: a wireless LED-fitted T-shirt and a drawing app that allow tailor-made text or design patterns to be instantly printed onto a t-shirt.
·         1:13 Remote-Controlled Model Bus: a remote-controlled model bus with doors, signs and lighting systems just like the real thing.
Professor Arthur Ellis, CityU Provost and Acting President, Mr Sunny Lee Wai-kwong, Vice-President (Administration), and Professor Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Chief-of-Staff, and about 200 academics and students also attended the event.
