HK$120 million gift to CityU from Dr Lee Shau-kee

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is privileged to receive a HK$120 million donation from Dr The Honourable Lee Shau-kee, GBM, Chairman of Henderson Land Development Company Limited, to support the long-term development of the University. The donation, which is made through Lee Shau Kee Foundation, will provide funding for the setting up of endowed chair professorships and student scholarships to promote academic advancement and student achievement.

Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, expressed his deep gratitude to Dr Lee on behalf of the University for his generous gift. “Dr Lee is an exceptional leader, who believes that quality education is essential for the development of society, and that investment in education will benefit not only the individual recipients but also the larger community,” he said. “We will ensure the donation becomes one of his best investments by nurturing talent and conducting cutting-edge research to meet the needs of society and advance its development.”

An agreement was signed between Dr Lee and President Kuo on 17 August to mark the donation. Among the guests who witnessed the signing of the donation agreement were Mr Martin Lee, Vice Chairman of Henderson Land Group; Dr Colin Lam, Vice Chairman of Henderson Land Group; Mr Augustine Wong, Executive Director of Henderson Land Group; Mr Billy Wong, General Manager of Construction Department of Henderson Land Group; Dr Chung Shui-ming, Pro-Chancellor of CityU; Mr Lester Garson Huang, Council Chairman of CityU; Professor Matthew Lee Kwok-on, Vice-President (Development and External Relations) of CityU and Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development & Alumni Relations) of CityU.

In addition to supporting the strategic initiatives of the University, the donation will be used to set up Lee Shau Kee Chair Professorships in data science and engineering, and the Lee Shau Kee Scholarship Fund for various student scholarships to advance research leadership and support student development. The donation will enable the University to make use of the Matching Grant Scheme to maximise the benefit for the development of the University.

A renowned entrepreneur and respected philanthropist, Dr Lee has rendered numerous significant contributions to education and community development in Hong Kong, mainland China and other countries. He has been a long-time supporter of CityU, and a student residence hall on campus was named after Dr Lee in 2006.

Dr Lee’s outstanding contributions have earned him a string of accolades, including bestowed with honorary doctorates in business administration, the social sciences and law, as well as honorary fellowships from universities in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas. In 2007, in recognition of his lifelong devotion to education and contribution to the community, the HKSAR Government awarded Dr Lee its highest honour, the Grand Bauhinia Medal.
