Seven scholars from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) were ranked as the top 100 scientists in materials-related fields in Greater China. CityU performed well in the ranking, second only to the Chinese Academy of Sciences that has 14 researchers on the list.

The ranking is based on indicators put forward by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis of Stanford University and his team in 2019. Indicators for this ranking include total citations, Hirsch h-index, Schreiber hm-index modified by co-authors and so on, to rank more than 100,000 top scientists around the world. 

Based on the database, 13 of the top 100 scientists in Greater China are from Hong Kong, concentrating on materials-related fields including materials, organic chemistry, applied physics, nanoscience & nanotechnology, general chemistry, polymers, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical physics, energy, inorganic & nuclear chemistry, and others.
