Successful transformation of UOW College Hong Kong

The Community College of City University of Hong Kong (CCCU) officially separated from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) in September this year and transitioned to the University of Wollongong (UOW), establishing the UOW College Hong Kong (UOWCHK).

CityU will continue to focus on academia and pursue excellence in professional education and translational research with our world-class and diverse faculty members, while UOWCHK will further grow as a degree-granting university.

Following a five-year transition period beginning in 2015, UOWCHK has been established. The independent accreditation of UOWHK under the relevant Hong Kong ordinance gained the approval of the Hong Kong Government in 2019 after a rigorous institutional review. The new campus located in the Kowloon City district was secured in 2020 and is expected to be operational from September 2021, while the main campus will be located in Tai Wai, New Territories.

“The acquisition of our Kowloon City campus is a significant milestone for the College, with its focus on modern teaching spaces, flexible administrative and academic staff spaces, and satellite library incorporating informal student learning areas,” said Ms Vanessa Bourne, President of UOWCHK.

Mr Lester Huang, Chairman of the CityU Council, said: “The rich expertise of UOW in the provision of high quality education programmes has meant that UOWCHK will help nurture talents tailored to local needs and requirements whilst incorporating a broader international context into the curriculum, thus benefiting Hong Kong and the students.”

“We are grateful to City University of Hong Kong and its staff for working closely with UOW College Hong Kong to ensure such a smooth transition. This has allowed the rejuvenated College to be established on a solid footing,” said Mr Peter Robson, AO (Order of Australia), Chair of the Boards of UOW Global Enterprises and of UOWCHK.

Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, said: “We are happy to witness the successful evolution of the Community College of City University into UOW College Hong Kong, and it has our best wishes for future success.”
