CityUHK professor honoured with HKEST Award for pioneering renewable energy research

Professor Angus Yip Hin-lap, Associate Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Clean Energy at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), received the Hong Kong Engineering Science and Technology Award (HKEST Award) 2023 in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the advancement of renewable energy research.

Professor Yip’s research focuses on enhancing urban renewable energy access through the development of innovative photovoltaic (PV) technologies. His work encompasses the creation of new-generation printable optoelectronic devices, innovative integrating materials, device optimisation, and commercialisation.

He and his team’s pioneering efforts include the development of solar cells with new form factors for broader applications. These include solar energy harvesting devices that can be integrated into building roofs and facades, and organic solar cells that draw inspiration from nature. They also introduced a new perovskite material for making more affordable solar cells and advanced printing technology for transitioning photovoltaics from small-scale laboratory cells to large-scale modules.

Professor Yip said he was honoured to receive this award, which reaffirms his commitment to research for global energy solutions. “We aspire to contribute to the augmentation of renewable energy’s share of electricity generation, a key goal in Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050,” he said.

Recognised as a Highly Cited Researcher by both Stanford University and Clarivate Analytics for his consistently high-quality research output, Professor Yip holds a joint appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the School of Energy and Environment at CityUHK.

Beyond his academic and research contributions, Professor Yip has successfully explored the entrepreneurial landscape. He co-founded ATEC Films Technologies Limited, a company specialising in high-throughput simulation multifunctional film and encapsulation product solutions. The company has received funding from CityUHK’s HK Tech 300 and the HKSTP incubation programme. Another of his ventures, HKTech Solar Limited, is in the process of establishing printable solar cell manufacturing in Hong Kong. This endeavour aims to create homegrown PV products, representing a major move towards self-sufficiency in renewable energy technology for the region.

Moreover, Professor Yip collaborates with local companies and media to advocate for green tech, further solidifying his commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The HKEST Award was launched in 2022 by the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences to recognise contributions and excellence among the younger generation in Hong Kong in the fields of engineering science and technology. With support from the Innovation and Technology Commission, HKSAR, the Award commends young scientists from diverse disciplines who have excelled in developing creative solutions to problems and have made significant advances for the betterment of society.
