CityUHK triumphs at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva with 35 awards

Researchers from City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) achieved outstanding results at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG), winning 35 awards, including one Special Prize, eight Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, 10 Gold Medals, 11 Silver Medals and 5 Bronze Medals. In particular, winning 8 Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury this year is a record high for CityUHK. Their success keenly demonstrates CityUHK’s excellence in high-quality research and innovation on the global stage.

Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK, congratulated all the awardees for their well-earned international recognition. He said that their achievements showed on the global stage CityUHK’s culture of pursuing innovation and excellence and their determination to contribute to Hong Kong society and the world.

“I am extremely proud of CityUHK researchers for their extraordinary achievements,” he said. “CityUHK will continue to support our faculty and students in their pursuit of excellence and facilitate their efforts to bring their innovations to fruition to create a positive impact on society.”

President Boey said that CityUHK is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year with the theme, “Innovating into the Future”, emphasising the University’s commitment to nurturing talent through innovation and pioneering research.

“CityUHK has remained steadfast in its commitment to fostering inspirational, interactive and innovative education. We will continue to cultivate talent and drive innovation through a wide range of farsighted initiatives, including the CityUHK Academy of Innovation (CAI), established earlier this year and the soon to be established Institute of Digital Medicine (IDM), which is crucial for addressing pressing global issues and contributing to Hong Kong, the Mainland and the rest of the world,” he added.

The project “Design and Nanofabrication of Highly Sensitive Plasmonic Sensors for Biomedical Cell and Molecule Detection”, led by Professor Stella W. Pang, Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering, won the Special Prize and the Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury.

Among the CityUHK’s winning teams in the 49th IEIG, 14 of them are start-ups and teams incubated by HK Tech 300, CityUHK’s large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme. They won three Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, five Gold Medals, four Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals.

IEIG, an annual event dedicated to inventions, provides a unique opportunity for inventors and researchers to present the results of their research and their new products. The 49th IEIG, held from 17 to 21 April in Switzerland, featured more than 1,000 inventions from 38 countries and regions around the world.
