City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) recently conferred the title of Honorary Fellow on three distinguished persons in recognition of their distinctive contributions to the development of, and service to, the University and the community.

The distinguished persons are:

?    Mr Hing Chao, Executive Chairman of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport;
?    Ms Nancy Chau Sin-wo, a philanthropist; and
?    Ms Grace Lau Mo-sheung, MH, OLY, a Hong Kong karate athlete.

Officiating at the ceremony on 27 September were Dr Chung Shui-ming, Pro-Chancellor of CityUHK, Mr Lester Garson Huang, Chairman of the Council, and Professor Freddy Boey, University President.

In his address, Mr Huang said, “By accepting the Honorary Fellowship, each of today’s awardees gives us the confidence that our teaching, research, development, and local and international outreach efforts have the support of the Hong Kong people.” During his speech, Mr Huang congratulated alumna Ms Lau on receiving another honour. She successfully defended her title by winning a gold medal in the Female Kata event at the 20th Asian Senior Karate Championship held recently in Hangzhou.

Mr Huang pointed out that the three Honorary Fellows were joining the University community at a fascinating stage in CityUHK’s development. This year, CityUHK is celebrating its 30th anniversary since achieving university status, after making significant progress in various areas and creating many new initiatives. Notably, CityUHK (Dongguan) received approval from the Ministry of Education in April and held its grand opening and official commencement of classes in September. CityUHK has also strengthened its collaboration with many overseas institutions, including top universities like the University of Cambridge, he noted. He expressed confidence that the three Honorary Fellows will inspire CityUHK to continue to grow and reach out, achieving even greater heights.

Mr Chao, speaking on behalf of the Honorary Fellows, said that although the three of them come from diverse backgrounds, being able to receive the honour together is an eloquent testament to the diversity and spirit of inclusiveness at CityUHK. He added that sharing the affinity of spirit that CityUHK fosters provides an institutional framework for their accomplishments, allowing them to extend their influence into the wider community and even beyond their lifetime. He and the other two recipients looked forward to being more involved in the development of CityUHK in the future.
