Dr. Jason Lam, Dr. Patrick Lee and Dr. Keith Ngan receive the UGC Special Grant for the Development of Virtual Teaching and Learning (VTL)

Congratulations to Dr. Jason Lam, Dr. Patrick Lee and Dr. Keith Ngan on receiving the UGC Special Grant for the Development of Virtual Teaching and Learning (VTL). Details of the funded projects are as follows:

Dr. Jason Lam

Harnessing VR and AR for VTL Course Enrichment

The classroom interaction between instructor and students is significantly lower in a virtual class than in-person teaching. This project aims to create various interactive activities and games using virtual reality (VR) stationary resources, such as a 360? picture or a panoramic figure, to increase classroom interactions, and subsequently promote students’ learning interest in a virtual setting.

Dr. Patrick Lee

Virtual Laboratories and Multi-perspective Interactive Videos for VTL Lab-work, Practicums, and On-site Training

This project aims to turn in-person lab modules in SEE's junior and senior level courses related to thermofluids, building sciences, energy and environmental engineering systems to online modules where students interact with dashboards to control the systems, take measurement and conduct analysis. The online lab modules will enhance student's readiness in the industry where using mobile devices to remotely control systems to acquire data and perform data analytics is now the common practice.

Dr. Keith Ngan

Generic and Targeted VTL for Self-Access Learning

This project is intended to provide students with additional feedback while they are working on computational labs for SEE1002 - Introduction to Computing for Energy and Environment. With online teaching, instructors cannot provide students with instant feedback by walking to their desk and looking at program code on a monitor. This project will address this deficiency by introducing an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) for computational labs.  Software will be developed to analyse student input, interact with students in a manner analogous to programs like Google Assistant and Apple's Siri, and provide tailored feedback for each student. This project will improve the online or virtual learning experience of students and facilitate the implementation of similar virtual teaching tools for other SEE courses.

The University Grants Committee (UGC) and the Quality Assurance Council (QAC) has allocated additional funding to support the eight UGC-funded universities in implementing various initiatives between 2021 and 2023 to promote the strategic development of virtual teaching and learning (VTL) in the medium to long run.
