Prof. Charles Xu Secured Research Grant to Advance Biofuel Innovation
Prof. Charles Xu, Chair Professor from The School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), has secured a RMB 400,000 research grant from the Jiangxi Academy of Sciences (江西省科學院)to support his groundbreaking work in sustainable biofuel production. Funded by the Jiangxi Provincial Department of Science and Technology and conducted in collaboration with the Jiangxi Academy of Science, this project will develop innovative hydrotreatment processes and catalysts to convert biomass and organic solid wastes—including food waste, manure, yard waste, crop residues, wastewater sludge, and microalgae—into high-quality liquid biofuels.
The research project, titled "Key Technologies for Production of Biofuels by Catalytic Upgrading of Bio-oils" (生物油催化重整製生物基燃油關鍵技術), focuses on utilizing various waste materials, including food waste, manure, yard waste, crop residues, wastewater sludge, and microalgae, to create clean and efficient energy alternatives. By optimizing catalytic upgrading techniques, the study aims to enhance biofuel yield and performance, offering a sustainable pathway for reducing carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.
Prof. Xu’s leadership in renewable energy research underscores SEE’s commitment to cutting-edge sustainable technologies that contribute to global energy solutions. His work will play a crucial role in developing practical and scalable biofuel innovations, reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a hub for green energy advancements.
SEE congratulates Prof. Charles Xu and his team on this significant achievement and looks forward to their continued contributions to sustainable energy research.
