Management students learn from industry masters

Karen Lai

A two-day residential workshop was held on 21-22 December in which 48 CityU's final year management students gained insightful knowledge on developing key competencies as human resources and international business professionals.

The workshop, Developing Management Talents for the Future, was held at Harbour Plaza Metropolis Kowloon as an out-of-classroom programme to provide undergraduates with practical tools to develop professional career in the fields of human resources management (HRM) and international business. A total of 13 prominent business leaders/HRM directors from leading corporations were invited to speak on HRM and Japanese business.

The first day programme was officiated by seasoned HR and management executive Dr Frankie Lam, Managing Director of a leading executive search firm Bole Associates Ltd, followed by two stimulating talks on "Working the Best between East and West" and "The Essence of Team - An Experiential Approach" by Mr Michael Leung, CEO of SunV International Corp., and Mr David Lam, a pioneer of adventure training in Hong Kong and Managing Director of an experiential training firm Experiential Development.

On the second day, students were divided into two groups according to their study streams. HRM students gained insights from sessions hosted by leading HR consultants and directors. Sharing sessions explored practical issues like "A Typical Day Working at an HR Consulting Firms" and "Challenges of HR in Mainland China". International business students learned more about the profiles and work culture of Japanese corporations from talks by HR directors of leading Japanese corporations such as Mitsubishi Corporation, Sumitronics Hong Kong Ltd, and Hanzawa (HK) Ltd.

and BBA (Hons) International Business are the two undergraduate programmes offered by the Department of Management. The Department emphasizes close collaboration with business leaders to ensure that the programmes are serving Hong Kong's business needs. Following the favourable response of a workshop earlier this year, the Department organized this second workshop to provide students with the knowledge, skills and awareness to interact with the changing needs of the profession.

The workshop is part of the Department's Career Development Program coordinated by Mr John Lai, Instructor, Career Development Officer and Summer Internship Coordinator for the Department of Management.
