CityU student tops IEEE paper contest

Mr Chiu Leung, a student from the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), has won the championship of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., (IEEE) Hong Kong Undergraduate Student Paper Contest 2003.

Chiu, now a postgraduate student whose research focus is on microwave circuitry, topped the contest with his paper "A New Ring Hybrid Mixer Design Using TS-CMRC Circuitry with very Low-Conversion Loss and Excellent Linearity Response". One of the major findings of his paper is that, with the application of a novel compact microstrip resonant cell developed by EE's Professor C H Chan and Dr Xue Quan , the performance of mixers is remarkably enhanced with low-conversion loss and good linearity response. Chiu said that the findings could have wide applications in telecommunications, mobile communications, radar transmission, and even satellite communications.

Another EE student, Mr Steven Yang , won third prize in the same contest, with his paper "Novel Design of Multiband Base Station Antenna for 2G and 3G Mobile Communication Systems". Basing his research work on an L-shaped probe antenna—a patented product by Professor K M Luk , Yang combined a hexagonal patch with the antenna, thus expanding the bandwidth to support third generation (3G), as well as Personal Communication Service (PCS) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA).

The IEEE is a global non-profit, technical professional association of more 360,000 individual members in some 175 countries. Through its members, IEEE has become a leading authority in technical areas ranging from computer engineering, biomedical technology and telecommunications, to electric power, aerospace and consumer electronics.

The IEEE Hong Kong organizes the annual Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Paper Contests to encourage IEEE student members in Hong Kong to apply their engineering knowledge, and to present their works concisely and coherently. Last year, three CityU participants— Mr Kenji Yum and Mr Wong Hang from EE, and Mr Chen Shengyong from the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Department—clinched awards in both IEEE Hong Kong Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Paper Contests 2002.
