CASSOS receives IT excellence award

Grace Ho

CASSOS, the Computer-Assisted Simulation System for Orthognathic Surgery developed by City University's Department of Computer Science (CS), was awarded a product silver prize at the IT Excellence Awards 2002 for its advanced and innovative technology.

Mr James Ng, Executive Director of CityU Extension, CS Head Professor Horace Ip and CS Associate Professor Dr Ken Law received a trophy and a certificate from Mr Henry Tang, Secretary for Commerce, Information and Technology, who officiated at the presentation ceremony held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on 18 February. Organized by the Hong Kong Computer Society for the fifth year in succession, the award scheme has been recognized as one of the most prestigious events in the local IT industry. This year the HKCS received 40 entries for the scheme under two main categories-IT applications and IT products. A new stream of awards was introduced this year to recognize the major contributions made to Hong Kong's economy by small and medium enterprises.

"I would like to congratulate the award winners this year for their innovation, creativity and hard work in developing good quality IT applications and products, which will help stimulate and foster the increasingly mature IT culture in Hong Kong," said Mr Tang.

A unique surgical simulation software product, CASSOS includes comprehensive medical records and image management functions of specific relevance to orthognathic surgery. An integrated and highly interactive system operating on a cost-effective PC Windows platform, CASSOS offers customizable lateral and frontal cephalometric analysis, surgical planning and soft tissue change prediction for orthodontic and orthognathic maxillofacial surgery. Its specially developed algorithm is at the heart of the first ever simulation system in Asia for orthognathic surgeries that provides better accuracy compared with existing products. CASSOS also provides a wide range of comprehensive reports and comparison functions demanded by surgeons.

CASSOS was acclaimed by the judging panel for employing "advanced technologies" and a database covering a variety of ethnic types. The panel also praised the successful collaboration of the multi-disciplinary team, which includes software engineers, animators and multimedia experts, in developing the innovative system.

CASSOS is marketed by SoftEnable Technology Limited, an associated company of the CityU Enterprises Group. Founded in 2000, the compnay designs and develops professional software solutions, such as workflow and document management systems that employ advanced information technology. The medical software has been adopted by major hospitals and dental centres in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, Singapore, the UK and the US.
