Programme Aims and Objectives

Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT) is one of the Flagship Programmes offered by CityUHK. GREAT is a 4-Year undergraduate option introduced in 2021/2022 aiming to nurture students who are interested in pursuing a career in scientific research or starting business ventures that involve the use of new scientific discoveries and innovative technologies. Students will be admitted to the College of Science and study a tailored common first-year curriculum. After one year of study, students will have a free choice of GREAT streams offered by the Departments of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (GREAT stream)
Bachelor of Science in Computing Mathematics (GREAT stream)
Bachelor of Science in Physics (GREAT stream)

Key Components

Independent research commencing as early as in Year 2
Mentorship by world-renowned researchers and experienced industrialists
Special courses on entrepreneurship & IP rights protection, patent application and research proposal / business plan development
Connection with industrialists
At least one semester of overseas academic/research exchange
At least one summer placement in local research laboratories or technological startup companies
At least one summer internship in overseas research institutes or technological startup companies
Opportunity to participant in research internship at world-renowned universities
Guaranteed admission to the respective PhD programme in Science (upon attainment of entrance requirements) for local students

The GREAT programme is also supported by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI), through providing mentorship and internship opportunities for the students. GREAT students who are eager to start their entrepreneurship journey are highly encouraged to sign up for HK Tech 300, a large-scale flagship innovation and entrepreneurship programme organised by CityUHK. Upon successful enrolment, all eligible participants will be sponsored for a 3-day intensive bootcamp to learn how to kick start their entrepreneurial journey from scratch, develop a business plan and deliver a pitch. Seed funds, angel funds, and external funds (up to HK$100,000, HK$1 million and HK$10 million, respectively) will also be made available to potential start-ups. Click here for more details.

Admission Requirements

High School Entrants

Current Year-One Normative 4-year Degree Students Admitted from 2021 Cohort and Thereafter

Existing Home Academic Unit	GREAT Stream Offered by	Minimum Requirements
Department of Chemistry / Department of Mathematics / Department of Physics	The same home academic unit	Completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B, including the number of credit units specified by the College/ respective home academic unit for its required courses; Minimum CGPA of 3.20, or CGPA lying within the Top 15% of students belonging to the same cohort of his/her programme, or students recommended by Programme Leader; and Passing an assessment interview
	An academic unit other than the existing home academic unit	Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. P.S.: Students should first apply for change of home major following the University’s regulations, and indicate their intentions for studying the GREAT stream offered by that receiving academic unit.

Scholarships

CityUHK Flagship Scholarships

Local students admitted under the Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT) programme, one of the Flagship Programmes of CityUHK, with outstanding HKDSE or GCE "A" level / IB results shall be automatically considered for the Flagship Scholarships.

The Flagship Scholarships include:

Tuition fees and hall fees incurred at CityUHK and is tenable for the normal duration of the programmes concerned
- Full Scholarship: 100% tuition and hall fees
- Half Scholarship: 50% tuition and hall fees
Guaranteed berth in the Halls of Residence
A one-off special sponsorship of a maximum amount of HK$500,000 for an overseas exchange of up to one year at a top-ranked university

CityUHK Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents

CityUHK Scholarships for Hong Kong Talents have been set up for Hong Kong students with excellent HKDSE or GCE "A" level / IB results applying to government-funded bachelor's degree programmes. The scholarship awards will cover up to six years of study, depending on the normal duration of the registered undergraduate programme. The normal duration of GREAT programme is four years.
