In the afternoon of 14 May, the College of Science (CSCI) received 33 secondary school visitors, including 31 Form 3 students and 2 class teachers from HKSYCIA Wong Tai Shan Memorial College. All visitors joined a CSCI-organised “Science tour”: containing a talk that goes with a related lab tour, and a science programme admission info session at the CityUHK campus.
Led by Miss Ng and Mr. Leung, the class teachers, the students first attended a Popular Science Talk delivered by Professor Siu Gin Cheung, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemistry, about the conservation of horseshoe crabs in Hong Kong. Professor Cheung is an expert on horseshoe crabs and works closely with Ocean Park on protecting different species of horseshoe crabs in Hong Kong.
The students then had a chance to see some alive horseshoe crabs that are protected in CSCI’s Aquatic Science Laboratory. A researcher from the lab explained in detail about the crabs’ living and breeding habits, and also what the students can do if they see living horseshoe crabs on beaches or even in the wet markets: call the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for help.
On behalf of CSCI, Professor Daniel Ho, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education), warmly greeted the teachers and students. He personally hosted the information session on introducing CSCI’s four undergraduate programmes, including our Flagship Programme: Global Research Enrichment and Technopreneurship (GREAT). Professor Ho encouraged the Form 3 students to choose science subjects as their HKDSE elective subjects to explore the infinite possibilities in the science world.
