LC Summer Learning Programme in Mainland China

Destination: Beijing, Mainland China
Partner Institution: Beijing Language and Culture University, Mainland China
Maximum Capacity: 5 participants

Program Objective:

  1. To aid in student development of increased language proficiency in Putonghua (Mandarin).
  2. To promote cross-border exchange and enhance students’ knowledge of the history, culture and systems of the host community.

Brief overview:
The core component of the program is the intensive Putonghua (Mandarin) course, which spans four weeks and focuses on developing proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension. Upon arrival, students will take part in a language proficiency examination which will determine their placement in one of multiple levels of instruction offered by the host institution. Through engaging activities and cultural/linguistic immersion, students will have the opportunity to make rapid progress in their language skills.

In addition to the language course, the summer program offers a diverse range of cultural events and leisure activities. Participating students will have the opportunity to engage in cultural excursions, visit historical landmarks, experience local traditions, and interact with local students and community members in Beijing. These activities aim to promote cross-border exchange and provide students with insights into the history, culture and system of the host community.

A program certificate will be awarded upon the successful completion of the Intensive Practical Putonghua (Mandarin) course.

Tentative Itinerary:

3 August 2025 (Sunday) Departure from Hong Kong to Beijing
4 August 2025 (Monday) Welcome Day – Induction activities
4 August 2025 (Monday) -
29 August 2025 (Friday)
Intensive Practical Putonghua (Mandarin) course (6 hours per day), cultural events, and leisure activities
30 August 2025 (Saturday) Return from Beijing to Hong Kong

Post-event evaluation and submission:
By the end of the program, students are expected to provide the following documents:

  • A written essay summarizing their evaluation of the program's quality and their overall learning experience.
  • A selection of 10 photos featuring themselves, rather than scenery or food, along with a two-minute video regarding their cultural and educational experiences during the program.

Estimated Student Contribution:
The University's Global Experience for All Funding Scheme subsidizes up to 60% of the direct costs for participants in this LC Summer Program. These costs include the course fee, airfare, accommodation, and local transportation between the airport and student residence on both the arrival and departure days. Students participating in the program are responsible for the remaining expenses.

The estimated contribution required from each student is approximately HKD7,000. However, selected students should refer to the latest announcements from the LC to confirm the exact amount, as this could vary due to fluctuations in flight fees, exchange rates, and other related cost factors.

Program Specific Requirements:
Any CityUHK undergraduate student with demonstrated interest in Putonghua (Mandarin) as an additional language is eligible to apply. Priority may be given to students who are currently learning (or who have studied) Putonghua (Mandarin) with the Chan Feng Men-ling Chan Shuk-lin Language Centre.
