LC Summer Learning Programme in Spain

Program Objective:

  1. To enrich students with Spanish language and culture knowledge.
  2. To enrich students' knowledge of Spanish daily life and lifestyle.
  3. To enable students to experience cultural differences by immersion in a foreign culture.
  4. To develop their interest and ability to study foreign languages for further studies or potential careers.
  5. To enhance their communication skills in Spanish.

Brief overview:
This four-week language and culture immersion program, offered by the Chan Feng Men-ling Chan Shuk-lin Language Centre, takes place in Cuenca, a historic city in the heart of Spain. It is designed for students who have demonstrated a solid commitment to learning Spanish. Daily language classes run from 9:15 am to 2 pm, Monday through Friday, and are complemented by approximately 12 to 15 hours per week of cultural and leisure activities that enrich participants' understanding of Spanish culture.

12 July 2025 (Saturday) –
13 July 2025 (Sunday)
Departure from Hong Kong to Cuenca, Spain. Assignment of host family and briefing
14 July 2025 (Monday) –
8 August 2025 (Friday)
Morning: Spanish as a Foreign Language classes
Afternoon: Spanish True Experiences
9 August 2025 (Saturday) Return from Cuenca, Spain to Hong Kong

Post-event evaluation and submission:

  1. Individual reflective writing: The reflective writing (in 1200-1500 words) requires students to present their discoveries of knowledge concerning learning the Spanish language and culture in this immersion program.
  2. DEC group video: The DEC group project will involve 4-5 students discovering Spanish culture and language in Cuenca. Students need to submit a short video presentation.
  3. Each student must submit 10 photos featuring themselves, rather than scenery or food, regarding their cultural and educational experiences during the program.

Estimated Student Contribution:
The University's Global Experience for All Funding Scheme subsidizes up to 60% of the direct costs for participants in this LC Summer Program. These costs include the course fee, airfare, accommodation, and local transportation between the airport and student residence on both the arrival and departure days. Students participating in the program are responsible for the remaining expenses.

The estimated contribution required from each student is approximately HKD16,240. However, selected students should refer to the latest announcements from the LC to confirm the exact amount, as this could vary due to fluctuations in flight fees, exchange rates, and other related cost factors.

Program Specific Requirements:
Any undergraduate student who is currently learning (or who has learnt) Spanish at CityUHK is eligible to apply for this summer program. Preferences will be given to students in their senior years of study who demonstrated great interest in their studies with a proven track record of consistently good academic performance, as well as an interest in Spanish language and culture. Priority will be given to students who have completed advanced level Spanish courses at CityUHK.
