Understanding and treating disease using nanoscience was the featured topic of a lecture by Professor Sir Mark Welland of the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, on 13 May.

A prestigious new programme titled “Fostering Innovation for Resilience and Sustainable Transformation” spearheaded by CityUHK has been officially endorsed by the UNESCO. This global initiative is designed to drive innovation in sustainability, advance measurable progress toward the UN’s SDGs.

CityUHK held a University-Industry Exchange Luncheon on 19 March. The event brought together industry elites to enhance collaboration, donations, and experience sharing among industry, business and academia, contributing to the advancement of research and innovation for the University, industry, and society.

CityUHK held an award ceremony on 27 March to commend 32 scholars who were named “Highly Cited Researchers 2024” by Clarivate. Their achievement affirms CityUHK’s exceptional research capabilities and underscores its steadfast commitment to promoting academic development and knowledge innovation.

CityUHK and EPFL announced the establishment of the Institute for Materials Innovation on 11 February. Several MoUs were signed with industry partners to co-develop a premier institute dedicated to advancing research in cutting-edge areas of materials science.

CityUHK welcomed Director Dou Xiankang, Secretary and President of the CPC Leading Group of the NSFC, and his delegation on 6 November. The visit aims to assess the effectiveness of NSFC funding schemes, enhance support for scientific initiatives in Hong Kong and Macao, and promote cooperation and exchanges between the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao.

Nearly two hundred and ten scholars from CityUHK were named among the “World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists”. Compared to the overall number of teaching and research staff at the University, this is the highest proportion of top scientists in Hong Kong, demonstrating the University’s exceptional research capabilities. The research achievements of these scholars are widely cited by their peers and internationally recognised.

Professor James Heckman, Director of the Center for the Economics of Human Development at the University of Chicago and Nobel Laureate in Economics, gave a talk titled "Promoting Skills to Promote Equality and Social Mobility" on 24 June 2024. It served as the inaugural event for the Distinguished Lecture Series on Global Sustainability organised by the Office of the Vice-President (Research).

11 February is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, established by the United Nations. CityUHK has brought together female faculty members and students to join the global celebration, showcasing its dedication to promoting gender equality and fostering an inclusive environment that empowers women in the field of science.
