Four students taking elective French courses at City University’s Division of Language Studies gained valuable experience and self-confidence by participating in the first ever French speech-writing contest organized by the Consulate-General of France in Hong Kong.
Rarely has a cultural festival exuded so much energy and zest in its opening ceremony. On 29 March, the "Hanbok Exhibition" opened in CityU's Run Run Shaw Library not only with a static display of the exquisite Korean national costume, but also a dynamic and potent demonstration of the traditional Korean martial art, Tae Kwon Do. Students and staff were given a sample of the Korean culture, from two different sides.

City University's Division of Language Studies collaborated with the Society of Japanese Language Education Hong Kong to present the 6th International Symposium on Japanese Studies & Japanese Language Education, 8 and 9 November. The annual Symposium, including discussion of Japanese dissertations and the improvement of Japanese Education, takes place in a different country each year.
The summer of 2003 proved to be very rewarding for 40 Associate Degree students who participated in a nine-week career exposure programme that placed them in organizations such as the Society of Boys' Centre, Hong Kong Student Aid Society, and Princess Margaret Hospital. Most experiencing full-time work for the first time, the students found the programme an eye-opening in terms of career and personal development.
Passion for Japanese language and culture brought precious rewards to Miss Vivien Ng Pui-ling and Miss Yuriko Leung Hor-ling, graduates of CityU's Associate of Arts in Applied Japanese Studies. With the sponsorship of Japan's Ministry of Education and Science, Miss Ng and Miss Leung achieved an opportunity to take up a one-year study at Hokkaiko University and Osaka University, respectively, commencing in October.
Last month, 22 outstanding foreign language students were awarded scholarships and sponsorships at ceremonies organized by CityU's Division of Language Studies (LS). At the French Awards Presentation Ceremony held on 16 May, 12 French programme students were recognized for their outstanding academic studies.
Miss Tang Sze-nga, a graduate of the Associate of Arts in Applied Japanese Studies in the Division of Language Studies, has been awarded a two-year scholarship of two million yen (approximately HK$134,000) for further studies at the Nagasaki International University (NIU) in Japan.
