Oxygen is vital for both human and marine life survival. A few years ago, Dr Ng Chi-on, a graduate of the Department of Chemistry at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), together with his team, developed a new type of photo-sensor that can effectively monitor oxygen concentration in seawater and reduce the monitoring cost. The team subsequently established a start-up company, called “NerOcean”.

Hong Kong Carful (Group) Limited (Carful) is an intelligent car rental platform, founded in September 2020 by CityU undergraduate student Ken Li Sheung-kwan and his high school best friend Harris Dai, who are both automobile lovers.

Established in 2010, Vitargent is a pioneer in the field of safety testing technology by using medaka and zebrafish embryos to perform toxicity tests. Clients include global cosmetics and skincare companies, food and beverage conglomerates, leading testing laboratories and governments. Vitargent was awarded the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2015.

Teaming up with 11 schoolmates, Marco So Lok-man, a third year Biology and Chemistry student at CityUHK, won the gold medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Giant Jamboree Competition 2014. The CityUHK team proposed a novel solution to tackle obesity, utilising genetically modified Escherichia coli.

After graduating from CityUHK, Ruth Ngan Wai-tung teamed up with her schoolmate Christy Tse Man-wai and founded Laso Technology in 2019.
